Terahertz Spectroscopy of Blood Components
نویسندگان
چکیده
The terahertz spectrum of human blood components and untreated swine whole blood between 0.2-1.4 THz (7-47 cm) were determined through the use of differential time-domain spectroscopy (D-TDS) techniques, with water being used as a reference. It was found that whilst significant differences between blood components and water were found at low frequencies (below 0.8 THz (27 cm)) for human blood plasma and red blood cell solution, no significant difference was found at high frequencies, which, for plasma, agrees with results published earlier (Matei & Dressel 2003). For untreated swine whole blood, due to the formation of blood clots in the whole blood, it was found that spectra typical of that found in scattering processes that have been published in this frequency range have been found. However, due to the large experimental uncertainties in the work, and the uncertainly of the validity of the results, it is imperative that further work be conducted in order to obtain more reproducible and accurate results.

Terahertz Behavior of Optical Components and Common Materials
As short range, ground based, surveillance systems operating at terahertz frequencies continue to evolve, increasing attention is being directed towards the behavior of dielectric materials at terahertz frequencies as well as the behavior of optical components used to control terahertz radiation. This work provides an overview of several terahertz optical components such as frequency selective ...
متن کاملProbing hydrogen-bonding in binary liquid mixtures with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy: a comparison of Debye and absorption analysis.
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is used to explore hydrogen bonding structure and dynamics in binary liquid mixtures, spanning a range of protic-protic, protic-aprotic and aprotic-aprotic systems. A direct absorption coefficient analysis is compared against more complex Debye analysis and we observed good agreement of the two methods in determining the hydrogen bonding properties when at lea...
متن کاملTerahertz and infrared spectroscopy of gated large-area graphene.
We have fabricated a centimeter-size single-layer graphene device with a gate electrode, which can modulate the transmission of terahertz and infrared waves. Using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in a wide frequency range (10-10 000 cm(-1)), we measured the dynamic conductivity change induced by electrical gating and thermal annealing. Both methods...
متن کاملFiber MOPA based tunable source for terahertz spectroscopy
We have developed a terahertz spectrometer based on difference frequency generation of beams from an ytterbium fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system. The spectrometer has a resolution of ∼ 2 GHz. It can be tuned rapidly over several hundred GHz, and a wider frequency range can be covered (0.7 – 2.5 THz demonstrated) by swapping in alternate seed lasers and adjusting the alignmen...
متن کاملTerahertz polarization imaging.
We present a new method to measure the polarization state of a terahertz pulse by using a modified electro-optic sampling setup. To illustrate the power of this method, we show two examples in which the knowledge of the polarization of the terahertz pulse is essential for interpreting the results: spectroscopy measurements on polystyrene foam and terahertz images of a plastic coin. Both measure...
